How to start selling DIGITAL PRODUCTS! (& why it changed my life 👀)
How to Get Started Selling Digital Products
Last year, I made over fifteen thousand dollars from selling digital products, and I’m on track to do the same this year. Digital products have the potential to be life-changing, both for you and your customers. In this article, we will discuss how you can get started selling digital products and the key factors to consider.
Acknowledging the Importance of Marketing
Before diving into the process of creating and selling digital products, it’s essential to acknowledge the importance of marketing. No matter how great your product is, if people don’t know about it, they won’t buy it. However, you don’t need to have a massive following on social media to succeed in selling digital products. I personally started with under 10k followers on YouTube and still managed to sell my products successfully. The key is to start early and continue to update and improve your products as your audience grows.
Designing a Product People Want to Buy
When designing a digital product, it’s crucial to understand its value and how it solves a problem for your target audience. Value can be provided through education, entertainment, customization, or helping people actualize their preferences. However, education is often the most intuitive way to provide value. Consider creating tutorials, guides, instructional ebooks, or video courses that teach your audience something valuable. Your product should have a clear value proposition and solve a specific problem for your customers.
To design a product people want to buy, ask yourself the following questions:
1. Who is this product for? Identify your target audience and tailor your marketing efforts accordingly.
2. What problem does this product solve? Clearly define the problem your product addresses and the knowledge or takeaway you want your customers to gain.
3. What sets your product apart from competitors? Research the market and identify unique features or aspects that differentiate your product from others. Refine your concept to cater to a different market if necessary.
My Experience Developing Digital Products
When I developed my Art YouTuber Workbook, I conducted market research to understand the landscape of YouTuber resources. I discovered that there was a lack of high-quality resources specifically designed for artists looking to grow on YouTube. This gap in the market inspired me to create the most comprehensive workbook possible, addressing the unique challenges artists face on social media. By conducting thorough market research, I was able to create a product that stood out and met the needs of my target audience.
Choosing the Right Platform to Sell Your Products
Once you have designed your digital product, you need to decide where to sell it. Platforms like WordPress, Squarespace, and Wix offer options for creating online shops. However, regardless of the platform you choose, you will need a domain name. This is where dot store domains come in. Using a dot store domain instantly sets your online store apart and makes it associated with selling online. Dot store domains have been proven to perform significantly better than dot com domains, resulting in more impressions and clicks. Additionally, dot store domains offer discounts at various entrepreneurial tools and services, saving you money as you build your business.
Creating Your Digital Product
When creating your digital product, aim to create the best possible product in its category. However, it’s important not to get overwhelmed by the pursuit of perfection. Start by creating a minimum viable product (MVP) that includes the essential features and content. This allows you to get started without being paralyzed by the need for perfection. Once you have an MVP, gather feedback from your target audience and make necessary improvements. Gradually add layers of complexity and refine your product based on feedback.
Finalizing Your Product and Marketing
As you finalize your product, there are three key aspects to consider:
1. Product Photos: Invest time in creating compelling and high-quality product photos. These photos serve as the packaging for your product and can significantly impact whether customers choose to purchase it.
2. Product Description: Craft an informative and clear product description that communicates who the product is for, the problem it solves, and what sets it apart from competitors. Include the answers to the questions you asked yourself earlier.
3. Delivery Mechanism: Determine how you will deliver your digital product to customers. This may involve uploading a zipped folder or providing links to access the product. Ensure your file names are clear and descriptive.
Once everything is in place, it’s time to press publish and start marketing your digital product. Remember to leverage your audience and explore various marketing strategies to reach potential customers.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
1. How can I market my digital product effectively?
To market your digital product effectively, consider the following strategies:
– Leverage your existing audience and promote your product through your social media channels, website, and email list.
– Collaborate with influencers or industry experts who can help promote your product to their audience.
– Utilize content marketing by creating valuable blog posts, videos, or podcasts related to your product’s niche.
– Run targeted ads on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, or Google to reach a wider audience.
– Offer limited-time discounts or incentives to encourage people to try your product.
2. How do I determine the right price for my digital product?
Pricing your digital product can be challenging. Consider factors such as the value it provides, the market demand, and the competition. Research similar products in your niche and analyze their pricing strategies. Additionally, consider conducting surveys or gathering feedback from your target audience to understand their willingness to pay. Experiment with different price points and monitor the sales and customer feedback to find the optimal price for your product.
3. How can I protect my digital products from piracy or unauthorized distribution?
While it’s challenging to completely eliminate piracy or unauthorized distribution, there are steps you can take to protect your digital products:
– Use digital rights management (DRM) tools or services that add encryption or watermarks to your files.
– Implement secure download links or access codes that limit the number of times a product can be downloaded or accessed.
– Consider using platforms or marketplaces that have built-in security measures to protect your products.
– Regularly monitor and enforce your intellectual property rights by sending cease and desist letters or taking legal action against infringers.
Remember, while these measures can help deter unauthorized distribution, it’s essential to focus on providing exceptional value and customer service to encourage legitimate purchases.
Conclusion
Selling digital products can be a lucrative venture, but it requires careful planning, market research, and effective marketing strategies. By understanding your target audience, designing valuable products, and leveraging the right platforms, you can create and sell digital products that resonate with customers. Remember to continuously refine and improve your products based on feedback and market trends. With dedication and a strategic approach, you can build a successful business selling digital products.

Thank you so much for sharing! It's so helpful. I've been in this world for almost five decades. I've struggled with chronic illness (including Hashimotos and major depression) most of that time. It took a long time to just admit I was an artist. So bravo. I've learned that being kind to myself is better for my productivity than bullying myself. I've been practically bed ridden for over a year and my brain is coming back online. I have lots of ideas but my body isn't always cooperating. I'm a photographer, painter, welder, landscape designer, etc. but it doesn't matter if I cannot create. I'm doing more stuff digitally and your content is just the things I need. Instead of using my little bit of energy on research, I can spend more time working on my plan to take over the world (lol), ehem, create. Bless you. ❤❤❤
