Demystifying Apple Pay: A Comprehensive Guide and Essential Tip for All Users
Why You Should Be Using Apple Pay
In today’s digital age, contactless payments have become increasingly popular, especially since the onset of the pandemic. It seems like everywhere you go, whether it’s a coffee shop, restaurant, or grocery store, vendors are now accepting Apple Pay or some form of contactless payment. But why should you be using Apple Pay?
One of the main advantages of Apple Pay is its convenience. With Apple Pay, you can store multiple cards on your phone, eliminating the need to carry physical cards with you. This not only saves space in your wallet but also ensures that you always have access to your preferred payment method. Whether you’re out for a quick coffee or doing a full grocery run, Apple Pay allows for seamless and hassle-free transactions.
How to Set Up Apple Pay
Setting up Apple Pay is a simple process that can be done in a few easy steps. To get started, open the Apple Wallet app on your iPhone. Then, press the plus button located at the top of the screen. From there, select the option to add a credit card. You can either manually enter your card details or use the camera to take a picture of your card, which the app will automatically recognize. Follow the on-screen instructions, and you’ll have Apple Pay set up in no time.
What Happens Behind the Scenes
To understand how Apple Pay works, it’s essential to have a basic understanding of traditional credit card transactions. When you swipe a credit card, the card’s information is sent to the bank through the card network (e.g., Visa or Mastercard). The bank then verifies the transaction, checking factors such as credit limit and account status. If approved, the transaction goes through, and the purchase is completed.
However, one downside of traditional credit cards is that they transmit your card information with every transaction. If someone gains access to this information, they can potentially misuse your credit card. This is where Apple Pay comes in.
Apple Pay acts as an intermediary between you and the bank, adding an extra layer of security. Instead of sending your credit card information, Apple Pay generates an encrypted token that is sent to the bank. The bank can decrypt the token and verify its authenticity. Once verified, the bank sends the information back to you, allowing you to complete the transaction. By using encrypted tokens instead of actual card information, Apple Pay significantly reduces the risk of credit card fraud.
A Cool Tip: Express Transit Card
In addition to its security features, Apple Pay offers a convenient feature called the Express Transit Card. By setting up your favorite card in the Express Transit section of the Wallet settings, you can use your phone for contactless payments without the need to authenticate each transaction. This is particularly useful for transit systems, as you can simply place your phone on the reader, and the payment will go through automatically. No need to open your phone or use Face ID. This time-saving feature has revolutionized the way many people use public transportation, eliminating the need for physical metro cards.

Thank you so much 😊
Great content, straight to the point, helpful visualisation … one tiny thing for me is your speed. Speak a bit slower and it will not only be easier to follow (e.g. for non native English speakers) but add some viewing time as a byproduct – win-win and an easy one. Content is king but accessibility is its queen, together they rule the world (of YouTube at least😉)
Here in Europe, the trend seems to be that contactless pay or Apple Pay is useful, but cash remains King (or queen if you are a girl)
DOES THE EXPRESS TRANSIT ONLY WORK FOR TRANSIT
Cash is FREEDOM…Cards are slavery…That said, I do use Apple Pay on an occasion.
Not a fan of express transit because it has activated by accident and double charged me and other people. Metro cards are getting phased out here in NYC soon so we all have to switch to wireless payments anyway. I don't mind authenticating 🙂
Great video, since apple pay was launched in the UK I never used a physical card or a wallet again, all my transactions were through apple pay, back then it was a new set up and not all establishment were apple pay friendly, nowadays is rare the place that doesn't accept it or website that hasn't got the apple pay features.
For me Apple Pay is easier using it on my daily life and I have tracked the exact location I used it if I can't remember the pay, even if is a online purchase in my apple wallet also add the link so if I forgot what was it I click on the link and I can see what was it.
Furthermore, is way easier for transportation nowadays, I live in London and the tube, the buses or the DLR (Transport for London -TFL) support apple pay contactless payment, so now I don't even use the Oyster card anymore, I tap on my phone on the reader and off I go, now using apple pay as a transport payment card give you a cheaper fee so more convenience now.
not only in London, all around the UK the transport accept apple pay.
I’ve heard that Apple Pay works in a different way outside the US
From what I’ve heard it makes a virtual copy of the credit card instead of acting like an intermediary
Dunno how true that is though
Just keep your phone safe
Does it work with all iPhones?
The thumbnail is click bait. This video isn’t about people using Apple pay wrong.
As someone who works in a bank, banks dont just get raw data. It's obviously encrypted, probably in a very similar way apple pay encrypts their data. If an entity can decrypt the data, it can encrypt it…. There is an added security benefit though as you're hopping through apple servers which if it gets encrypted differently in each 'transaction' would make it harder to decrypt, but also have higher chance of getting the encrypted data
Can’t remember when I last used cash
Thank you, getting the IPhone 15 and will set this up.
Well done sir. Very helpful! 👌
The express travel is nice but there is a catch . In Europe there are thieves that can touch the pocket you where the phone and make a transaction with a POS whithout your knowledge. So better have the expres travel feature off 😢
I remember the very early days of Apple Pay when most people didn't know about it. I'd be in stores or restaurants and the cashier would hand me the card reader to pay and then be surprised and confused when I held my phone over it, sometimes even saying, "did you just pay with your phone? I didn't even know you could do that!"
Now, it's how I make almost all of my purchases. I seldom bother to carry physical cash, and only carry a physical debit/credit card in my wallet for the very rare occasions when contactless doesn't work, or my purchase is over the limit for it.
Good video, but the transit tip is only good for people in areas with mass transit. Though, looking at the setting, it appears to take other cards as well? Like credit cards? So I could pay without authentication? Cool… but dangerous!
I think a better tip, which applies to everyone who uses it, is card order. For this you want to go into Settings, but not Wallet and Apple Pay. You actually want to tap your name/Apple ID, then Payment and Shipping. You'll have to authenticate (Face or Touch ID), then hit Edit in the top right. I recommend putting Apple Cash first, since it's mainly just rewards from the Apple Card, it's your money, you don't have to pay interest on it. Then whatever card order you like. This way, my subscriptions hit my Apple Cash first, then my cards, in the order I've selected. Super cool. If you have something like PayPal that has a balance, you can put it in front of your credit cards as well, if you want to.
Does apple make money on each transaction ?
Is there any alternative app ?
So if someone grabs your iphone from you and you have the "express on", they'll be able to use since no face id or code is needed? Please explain. Thanks
I am a first timer using apple pay, someone gonna send money to me,where i can see the apple pay number? Thank you😊
Thanks a bunch!
I can’t use Apple Pay because I have a keycard but it does sound like a good option
More secure than a physical card? Has anyone read the entire EULA to make sure of that?
I need to learn to use multiple apple pay cards. Because it’s so convenient it’s too easy to lose track of your payments imo.
Could you please talk a LITTLE faster. As it is, I can almost understand your message. Say – WHAT?
apple pay make it easier 😊

Hi! In my Wallet application, when i click add a card, a window appears with the message to find such a button on the website or application of the bank. I click on the add Apple Pay button in the app and it takes me back to the Wallet. And so in a circle and the map is not added. How can i fix that? And is not the region..
Great info, thank you very much!
Last tip is awesome 👏🏻
Thank you for the simple and quick detailed explanation!
Cool. quick and helpful.
Point to note: No express transit card on my phone, which is either the age of the model (7, therefor no IOS 16) or it may be a geo-restriction: I'm in Australia.
(But the express transit card sounds a bit too easy. No Face/Touch ID required? …hmmm… (uneasy look) )
Thanks.
I'm 70 and a totally apple dude. Was wondering how Apple Pay works and your introduction really has my wife and I excited about it; as we are so "sick and tired" of being hacked and always waiting for the new cards to arrive. Very cool and concise explanation. My wife did ask one question : what happens if you lose your iPhone..can the person have a payday with your phone? I'll investigate this matter…But for now…Great job Amigo. ***
Me again….lol. We can see it is not much of a problem at all. Keep on, Keeping on! Regards
I tried to do but when I try add my new Amazon Prime card but it says it is not a valid card but when I check the banks on the list it is there..
I have been using Apple pay for a while now and I love it. I did not know about the travel card express option. So, thanks for that. I learned something again today.
do you still get all of your points? lets say you're using amex will ur points show up in the amex app like you would use a regular card?
This is kind of a dumb question but do you have to put money on the apple cash card and use that one to receive the cash back?
The idea of excluding some of the CC credentials in the data transfer is great, even though you can still hack the Apple stream/mechanism or other wallet applications, if you get around or maybe directly in front of the encryption. You would then just be abusing the Apple pay process to your benefit. It stands or falls with how good the security measures of any paying process at the end of day are.
How am I using it wrong though?
Does Apple Pay have it'w own QR Code for people to pay you?
This turned out well. But on the flip side if someone takes your information and it auto updates on Apple Pay then they can have your information to your new card before you do.
Slow down. Why talk so fast when you are trying to teach/ explain how to use this función
Can you elaborate a bit on that part about "you cancelled a lost card / ordered a replacement and yet somehow Apple Pay updated to have the NEW card info even before you received the card in the mail"? How does that even work? 😄
Great video, I do have and use Apple pay
